This standard can be applied to various types of caverns that linearly change in proportion to the horizontal width of the cavern spring line. A defined linear relationship along the cavern centerline between the vertical distance of the cavern spring line to the top of rail, was established. This allowed for an optimization of the internal cavern crosssection by maintaining the train dynamic clearance envelope, while further improving the ventilation and reducing excavation volume. The optimal profile resulted in reductions to the flexural bending; improving the structural design, while requiring less concrete and reinforcement.
